Dr. Craig Carter named new Medical
Director of Kentucky ITLS
The Kentucky chapter of ITLS wishes to welcome Dr. Craig Carter as
the new chapter medical director.  Dr. Carter is taking over the position
from Dr. Julia Martin who stepped down September 10, 2009.

Dr. Carter is from the Chicago area where he completed a combined
residency in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics.  He moved to
Lexington, Kentucky 6 years ago and is currently serving as an
Assistant Professor in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the
University of Kentucky.  He is the Medical Director of Pediatric
Emergency Medic in as well as the medical director for UK/PHI Air
Transport Services.

When asked why he was interested in becoming the ITLS Medical
Director, Dr. Carter stated, “I want to see a state wide trauma system
that will bring the best possible care to injured people across the state,
not just those closest to the level one trauma hospitals”.  “The
challenges are many, but with training and cooperation they can be
overcome”, he added.  Dr.  Carter is also working with Dr. Andrew
Bernard, director of Trauma Services at University of Kentucky, and a
coalition of rural hospitals to develop a trauma system to serve their
communities that will hopefully become the ground work for a   state
wide system.

Dr. Carter shares ITLS’ ideology that better evaluation and treatment in
the prehospital setting will lead to better outcomes for the injured
person.  “Prehospital providers are where it all starts,” Dr. Carter
commented.  “Rapid and accurate evaluation will get the patient to the
most appropriate facility,  whether that be a local emergency room or an
air medical flight to a level one trauma center.” “Serving the needs of
the patient is the most important factor,” he added.

Over the past twenty-five years ITLS has grown from a local
organization to train medical providers how to evaluate and manage
trauma patients to an international organization that adapts and meets
the needs of the communities it serves.  Dr. Carter joins that great
tradition and we look forward to the future under his guidance.
